After weeks of tension and controversy, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have decided to re-elect their former speaker, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa, following the resignation of Mrs. Mojisola Meranda. The decision to reinstate Obasa came after a series of interventions from the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at both the state and national levels, marking the resolution of the ongoing crisis within the Assembly.

Despite early speculation that Obasa might resign after his reinstatement, sources close to the situation have revealed that the former speaker intends to remain in his position. According to a well-placed insider, “Obasa is back for good; he will not resign.” The same source also confirmed that Mrs. Meranda would be reinstated to her previous role, closing the chapter on the internal conflict that had disrupted the Assembly’s operations.

The crisis began on January 13, 2025, when 33 out of the 39 members of the House voted to remove Obasa, replacing him with his former deputy, Meranda. The move sparked significant controversy, prompting the intervention of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) and, ultimately, the Presidency, which instructed the Council to step in and help resolve the matter. This intervention by the Presidency and the leadership of the APC played a pivotal role in diffusing the crisis, ultimately restoring order within the Lagos State House of Assembly.

In light of these developments, Awijare News reports that the political landscape of the state Assembly is now back to its previous equilibrium, with Obasa back in office and the Assembly looking ahead to a more stable future. The resolution of this crisis, largely attributed to APC leadership’s strategic interventions, demonstrates the party’s commitment to maintaining unity and ensuring the smooth functioning of state governance.
