Amid escalating political tensions in Rivers State, President Bola Tinubu has made a significant move by appointing Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (rtd) as the state’s new administrator. This appointment comes as part of a broader decision to suspend several key political figures in the state, including Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

In a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, President Tinubu formally announced the suspension, which will last for an initial period of six months. He emphasised that this action was taken in the interest of the people of Rivers State, acknowledging the ongoing political crisis and unrest in the region. Tinubu also highlighted the need for decisive leadership and administrative changes to stabilise the state, particularly in the aftermath of the ongoing political struggles.

The suspension of the governor, his deputy, and the state lawmakers aims to ensure a more direct and efficient approach to governance, with Vice Admiral Ibas stepping into the role of administrator. This decision was made to address the serious governance challenges in Rivers, including the increasing instability in the state’s political landscape.

In his address, Tinubu clarified that this declaration would not affect the judicial arm of the state, which would continue to operate independently according to its constitutional duties. While Ibas will assume control over the state’s administration, he will not have the authority to pass new laws. However, the administrator will have the ability to implement necessary regulations, though such regulations will require approval from the Federal Executive Council and must be promulgated by the President before being enforced in the state.

This move marks a decisive intervention in Rivers State’s governance crisis, with the president taking swift action to restore order and ensure that the state is managed in a way that prioritises the well-being of its citizens.
