The 2025 Jagaban Football Championship reached an electrifying climax on Thursday at the Legacy Pitch of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, with fans on the edge of their seats as SGFC and 36 Lion FC battled for glory.

Among the dignitaries in attendance was Lekan Fatodu, the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, whose presence underscored the tournament’s growing importance in grassroots football.

The competition that was held in honour of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu showcased the best of young Nigerian football talent. Eight teams fought tooth and nail over four action-packed days, but only one could claim the coveted Jagaban Cup.

The final was a test of endurance, skill, and nerves. After a goalless 70 minutes, the match was decided by penalties, where SGFC kept their composure to secure a dramatic 5-4 victory over 36 Lion FC. The roar from the Ilorin-based team and their supporters was deafening—their hard work had paid off in the most nerve-wracking way possible.

Recognising their effort and commitment, Fatodu made a personal donation of ₦200,000 to the winning team, further proving his dedication to grassroots sports development. Since taking office in early 2024, he has been instrumental in reviving sports in Lagos, ensuring young athletes get the recognition and support they deserve.

The mastermind behind the championship, Hajji Gafar Liameed, Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association, couldn’t hide his pride in the tournament’s success. “This championship embodies the values of President Bola Tinubu—discipline, high moral standards, and youth empowerment through football,” he remarked. With plans already in motion to expand the competition, the future of the Jagaban Football Championship looks even brighter.

A total of 14 matches, 38 goals, and countless moments of brilliance made this edition unforgettable. As the floodlights dimmed and players embraced in celebration and heartbreak, one thing was clear—grassroots football in Nigeria is alive, thriving, and only getting stronger.
