Yenagoa, Nigeria — Bayelsa Queens continued their impressive campaign in the 2024/2025 Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) season with a confident 2-0 victory at home, powered by a debut goal from teenage forward Harmony John and a dominant team performance that reinforces their Super Six ambitions.

Teenage Prodigy Harmony John Shines on NWFL Debut

All eyes were on the Prosperity Girls following their Federation Cup victory over Naija Ratels, and Coach Whyte Ogbonda didn’t hesitate to make bold changes for this league clash. One of those changes was the introduction of 17-year-old Harmony John — a breakout talent signed from Golden Sun Sports Club after a stellar showing at the Prosperity Cup in Yenagoa.

The young striker wasted no time in making an impact. Just 10 minutes into her first professional start for Bayelsa Queens, Harmony pounced on a loose ball during a goalmouth scramble and coolly slotted home the opening goal — a moment that sent the home fans into celebration and firmly announced her arrival in top-flight football.

Coach Ogbonda’s Tactical Masterclass

Bayelsa Queens maintained control throughout the first half, and at the interval, Coach Ogbonda made a trio of tactical substitutions to increase attacking pressure. Vera Samuel, Dooshima Tarnum, and Precious Oscar entered the fray, immediately energizing the midfield and forward lines.

The changes paid off midway through the second half. After a fierce shot from Tarnum crashed against the crossbar, Olabiyi Alaba reacted quickly to head in the rebound, extending the lead to 2-0. The Prosperity Girls kept the pressure on, but a series of strong saves from the visitors’ goalkeeper prevented an even wider scoreline.

Post-Match Reaction: Focus on the Super Six

Speaking to reporters after the match, Bayelsa Queens Technical Adviser Whyte Ogbonda emphasized that while goals are important, collecting maximum points remains the team’s top priority.

“We played well, and although people expected more goals, our focus is always on securing the three points. That’s what matters most, and we’ve achieved that today,” said Ogbonda.

With this result, Bayelsa Queens remain firmly in the hunt for a spot in the NWFL Super Six, the elite playoff that determines the league champion.

What’s Next for Bayelsa Queens?

Bayelsa Queens now turn their attention to a crucial away fixture against Adamawa Queens on NWFL Matchday 12. With momentum on their side and key players hitting form, Coach Ogbonda’s side will be aiming to extend their unbeaten run and move closer to Super Six qualification.
