Uyo, Nigeria – Ibom Angels FC displayed grit, resilience, and tactical brilliance as they secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Naija Ratels FC in Matchday 11 of the 2024/2025 Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) Premiership. The match, played at the Uyo Township Stadium, was a dramatic showcase of top-tier women’s football, with both teams giving their all in an intense contest that was filled with suspense and action.

Sofiat Bankole Puts Naija Ratels Ahead

The match started with both teams demonstrating their attacking intent. Naija Ratels FC broke the deadlock in the 30th minute when Sofiat Bankole found the back of the net, giving her side a 1-0 lead. The opening goal came from a well-executed strike that left the Ibom Angels defence scrambling. As the first half progressed, Naija Ratels seemed poised to take the lead into the break, but the game was far from over.

Chioma Ashiegbu Equalizes with Cool Penalty Finish

The second half saw a determined Ibom Angels FC side looking to claw their way back into the match. Their chance arrived in the 55th minute when a penalty was awarded after Ijeoma Onweagba was fouled inside the penalty area. Chioma Ashiegbu, who has been a reliable presence for the team, stepped up to take the spot-kick. With a calm and composed finish, Ashiegbu sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, bringing the score to 1-1 and levelling the playing field.

The goal ignited the Ibom Angels, who began to pile on the pressure in search of a winner. Their relentless attacking play continued to rattle the Naija Ratels defence, pushing them back and forcing errors.

Abigail Awak’s Heroic Strike Seals Victory

In the 69th minute, the pressure paid off. Abigail Awak, who had been a standout performer for the team this season, scored the winning goal with a clinical strike from inside the 18-yard box. Awak’s second goal of the season was perfectly timed, showcasing her sharpness in front of goal. The Orange Ladies celebrated as the ball hit the back of the net, securing a crucial 2-1 victory.

The match was marked not only by skilful display but also by dramatic moments. Both teams ended the match with a player sent off, as two players received red cards for their involvement in off-the-ball incidents. The high-stakes nature of the match only added to the excitement and drama, keeping the fans on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.
