Wafa League 2025: Nigeria’s Premier Grassroots Women’s Football League Returns with 22 Teams

The stage is set for another exciting season of Nigeria’s leading grassroots women’s football competition—the Wafa League. This year’s edition kicks off on Saturday, May 31, 2025, featuring 22 ambitious teams from across the country all vying for national recognition and championship glory.

Organized by the Female Football Academies Proprietors (FEFAP), the Wafa League continues to cement its reputation as the heartbeat of female football development in Nigeria, providing a pathway for emerging players to reach the professional stage.

Tournament Format: Zonal Groupings and Final Showdown

Before the first ball is kicked, a league draw and seminar will be held on May 24 to determine zonal placements and finalize logistics. The teams will be grouped into zones for the preliminary stage, with the top two teams from each zone qualifying for the final round. This structure ensures regional representation while fostering intense competition at the grassroots level.

Defending Champions: CAT Ladies Eye Back-to-Back Glory

All eyes will be on CAT Ladies of Surulere, Lagos, the reigning champions who lifted the 2023/2024 Wafa League title. With a strong squad and a legacy to uphold, they’ll be looking to defend their crown against a competitive field packed with both new challengers and seasoned contenders.
