In a stunning twist of fate, Remo Stars Ladies defied expectations and claimed a historic 1-0 victory over Edo Queens in their debut NWFL Super Six match on Saturday. Facing off against the reigning champions and 2023 CAF Women’s Champions League semi-finalists, the Ogun-based underdogs proved they were not just there to make up the numbers.

Few gave Remo Stars Ladies a chance. After all, both teams had previously faced off in the group stage, where Edo Queens emerged dominant, finishing top of the table and securing a victory in Ikenne. But this time, with a new level of determination and a point to prove, Remo flipped the script.

Leading the charge was Coach Wemimo Mathew, a former Edo Queens tactician who was determined to make a statement against her old side. And it took just eight minutes for her squad to strike gold. A moment of brilliance, a well-executed game plan, and a cohesive team effort saw Remo Stars Ladies take an early lead — one they would fiercely defend until the final whistle.

“It was a tough game,” Coach Wemimo reflected post-match. “But we had our plan, and it worked. There was a time we were struggling in midfield, but I made some quick adjustments, and we managed to hold off their pressure. Winning this game, against the defending champions, in our first Super Six appearance, means everything.”

On the next challenge, Coach Wemimo didn’t mince words:

“Naija Ratel is one of the best privately owned clubs in Nigeria. I respect them, but we’re ready for the challenge. What we showed today, we plan to double in the next game.”

When asked about long-term ambitions, her response was definitive:

“We didn’t come this far just to be participants. Every team in the Super Six wants to win the league. The way we started shows we are capable. If we stay consistent, we believe we can win this.”

Even with their male counterparts recently clinching the NPFL title, Wemimo insists her squad remains unfazed.

“There’s no pressure on us. The men’s team winning was a big moment, and we’re proud. For us, being this competitive in just two years of existence is already a success. But if we win the league, it will be a historic milestone for private clubs in Nigerian football.”

From underdogs to contenders, Remo Stars Ladies have announced themselves on the grandest stage. Their journey has only just begun, but with their fearless spirit and tactical discipline, they may just rewrite history.
