Nigeria’s Flying Eagles are one step closer to continental glory as they gear up to face South Africa in a crucial semi-final showdown at the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The highly anticipated clash is set for Thursday at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia, Egypt, where both teams will be playing not just for a spot in the final but for continental bragging rights.

How They Got Here: Nerves, Penalties, and Late Winners

Earlier in the day, the Flying Eagles booked their place in the final four after surviving a tense quarter-final match against Senegal, which ended 0-0 after regulation time. It took a dramatic penalty shootout, but Nigeria held their nerve to win 3-1 on penalties, securing a semi-final berth and punching their ticket to the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.

South Africa’s journey was just as intense. The Amajita faced the Democratic Republic of Congo in a hard-fought contest that also remained goalless at full time. It wasn’t until the 105th minute of extra time that Thabang Mahlangu broke the deadlock with a composed finish that sent South Africa into the semis and confirmed their qualification for the U-20 World Cup.

Nigeria vs South Africa: A Clash of Youth Titans

Both teams have now secured a place on the global stage, but continental pride remains on the line. Thursday’s semi-final promises fireworks, with Nigeria’s physicality and attacking flair going head-to-head against South Africa’s disciplined structure and tactical awareness.

The Flying Eagles will count on their depth, tournament experience, and resilient backline, while South Africa hopes their late-game heroics and organized midfield can carry them through to a historic final.
