Q: As we count down to another edition of the Peace Cup, can you briefly reflect on how it all started and why the name “Peace Cup”?
Dr. Kolade Ibrahim:
The Peace Cup is the best grassroots football tournament in Lagos State, thanks to the quality and standard I have consistently implemented since its inception. It all started out of my passion for youth development and my desire to bring structure to football in our environment — because, truthfully, football in this area was nothing to write home about.
The name Peace Cup came from the need to address misconceptions and divisions among youths in the community. I saw football as a powerful tool to unite people. So, I decided to use my vast experience in the game to foster unity and initiate the Peace Cup Football Tournament — a platform where football becomes a vehicle for peace and social harmony.

Q: How many editions have you organized so far, and what stands out as your biggest memory?
Dr. Kolade Ibrahim:
So far, we’ve successfully held four editions. The fourth edition holds a special place in my heart — it brought the biggest memories. The level of engagement, the quality of play, and the community turnout were phenomenal.
Q: How has the tournament impacted the hosting community?
Dr. Kolade Ibrahim:
The impact has been massive. Economically, it has boosted local businesses during the tournament period. Socially, it has given the youth a sense of identity and purpose. Most importantly, it has served as a platform for talent discovery and development. We’ve seen players use this stage to get noticed and further their careers.

Q: Can we expect anything different or special in this year’s edition?
Dr. Kolade Ibrahim:
Absolutely. Every year, we aim to surpass the previous one. We’re working hard behind the scenes to ensure that the fifth edition will create new and unforgettable memories. Expect improved organization, better branding, and possibly more scouts and guests.
Q: What’s your message to the Lagos State Government regarding sports infrastructure in your area?
Dr. Kolade Ibrahim:
Our message to the government is simple: where there are quality sporting facilities, talent development becomes easier and more effective. Accessibility to proper infrastructure boosts performance and nurtures dreams. We urge the Lagos State Government to invest in sports facilities in our community. Doing so won’t just benefit the area — it will contribute to the growth of national and even international-level athletes.
With the Peace Cup entering its fifth edition, Dr. Kolade Ibrahim’s unwavering commitment to youth empowerment through football continues to resonate across the grassroots football scene in Lagos. His vision of peace through sport is not only commendable — it’s impactful, transformative, and here to stay.
