The National Sports Festival in Abeokuta kicked off with a bang on Day 1 of men’s boxing, but the action inside the ring was not without its fair share of surprises. With a stringent adherence to rules, over 10 boxing matches were decided by walkovers, setting the tone for what promises to be an intense competition.
The Walk-Over Rule: A Strict Enforcer of Discipline
One of the most notable aspects of the competition on Day 1 was the firm enforcement of the walkover rule. According to the regulations, if a boxer is not present within two minutes of their scheduled fight time, the opposing boxer automatically wins. Lastly, Kehinde Wazzan’s opponent failed to show, making it an automatic walkover win for the Benue State boxer in the 50kg category.
What Do These Walkovers Mean for the Competition?
While walkover victories might seem like free passes for some athletes, they are indicative of the larger themes of this year’s festival—strict discipline, time management, and readiness. In a competition of this magnitude, being punctual and prepared is as important as physical skill in the ring.

For some, the absence of opponents may feel like a missed opportunity to showcase their skills. However, in a tournament where stakes are high, each step toward the next round, no matter how it is achieved, is a victory in itself.
Looking Ahead: What’s Next for the Fighters?
As the festival progresses, more action-packed bouts are expected, and these boxers who gained walkover wins will face tougher opponents. Their focus will now shift from winning by default to proving their skill and readiness in the ring.
The walkover victories may be a blessing in disguise, providing these fighters with extra time to strategize and mentally prepare for the more competitive matches ahead. With stricter rules in place, one thing is clear—the National Sports Festival is serious about maintaining integrity and discipline in all events.
