In a race defined by heart and heroism, Kate Odumoso of Delta State overcame not only fierce competition but her own physical limits to win the women’s 100m gold medal at the 2024 National Sports Festival in Abeokuta. It was a victory born from sheer determination, ending with her collapsed on the track—exhausted, but victorious.
Odumoso, known for leaving everything on the track, had already given a warning in the semifinal, where she had to be assisted off the track after a gutsy performance to qualify for the final. Yet, far from being a sign of weakness, it proved to be a prelude to her most triumphant moment yet.

A Podium of Power
Odumoso led a Delta State one-two finish, as her teammate Obi Jennifer Chukwuka followed closely in 11.55 seconds to clinch silver. Ogun State’s Badá Iyanuoluwa took the bronze in 11.58 seconds, while Bayelsa’s Sophia Oghenekaro crossed fourth at 11.71 seconds.

Delta State’s 1-2 finish underlined their sprint dominance, even as Edo State took the men’s 100m title with Chidera Ezeakor. Together, both states have reaffirmed their place as Nigeria’s sprinting strongholds at this year’s festival.
A Champion’s Heart
Odumoso’s victory was more than a medal—it was a testament to resilience. Her collapse at the finish line wasn’t a sign of fragility but a mark of an athlete who gave absolutely everything for her state and her dream. In the face of physical exhaustion, she found enough strength to deliver one of the most stirring performances of the 2024 National Sports Festival.
Her win has not only elevated her into the national spotlight but also inspired a new wave of admiration for athletes who embody true sportsmanship and courage.
