In an inspiring display of strength and resilience, Super Falcons defender and Bayelsa Queens captain, Blessing Illivieda, has shared the emotional reason behind her decision to return to the national team camp just days after the tragic passing of her husband, Ibrahim Abiola.

Illivieda’s husband passed away on May 23, 2025, only a year and four months after the couple exchanged vows on January 21, 2023. While many on social media questioned why she chose to join the camp instead of taking time to mourn, the defender’s heartfelt explanation has touched the hearts of fans across Nigeria.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Pidgin, Blessing Illivieda revealed that donning the green and white of Nigeria was the greatest tribute she could pay to her late husband. “It pained me deeply, but I know if he were alive, he would want this—for me to play for my country. It was a dream we both shared,” she said.

Determined to honour that dream, Blessing Illivieda joined the Super Falcons camp ahead of the international friendly against Cameroon in Abeokuta, Ogun State. In the match on Tuesday, the Falcons secured a 2-0 victory, with captain Rasheedat Ajibade netting both goals.

For Illivieda, her presence at camp wasn’t about leaving her grief behind—it was about transforming her loss into strength and pride. “I didn’t come to camp to forget what happened. I came to make him proud. I carry his spirit with me every time I step on the pitch,” she shared.

Her courage and dedication have resonated with fans and players alike, many praising her patriotism and determination in the face of such personal pain.
