As the Nigeria National League (NNL) Southern Conference regular season hurtles towards its thrilling finale next weekend, the race for the coveted Super 8 slots has become a fierce contest of grit, goals, and glory. Three of the four available tickets to the Super 8 showdown have now been claimed, leaving just one slot hanging tantalizingly in the balance.

In Group A, Crown FC solidified their place in the Super 8 with a crucial 2-1 victory over Ijele SC away from home, bringing their tally to 33 points. The result was made even more decisive after Smart City FC fell 2-0 to Edel FC, clearing the path for Crown FC to join Warri Wolves, who had already punched their ticket to the Super 8 from the same group. The duo’s qualification now sets the stage for a grand battle for the ultimate prize.

Over in Group B of the NNL Southern Conference, the drama was no less intense. Kun Khalifa FC, who stunned many by holding Godswill Akpabio FC to a 1-1 draw at the Dan Anyam Stadium in Owerri, managed to grab the crucial point they needed. That solitary point lifted Kun Khalifa to 37 points, securing their own Super 8 berth. Their place was further cemented by Osun United’s disappointing 2-1 loss to Gateway United in Abeokuta, leaving Osun United stuck on 33 points.

Sporting Lagos FC will play their final regular season match tomorrow against Solution FC. A win would take them to 34 points and temporarily lift them to second place behind Kun Khalifa FC heading into the last matchday. However, Sporting Lagos FC will have a bye on that final weekend, leaving the door open for Osun United to potentially overtake them in the standings.

With the final Super 8 ticket in Group B still unclaimed, the upcoming last matchday promises high-stakes action. Osun United now face a must-win clash against First Bank FC, who are fighting for survival at the other end of the table. First Bank, currently on 24 points, needs a victory in their last game against Osun United, and if they get a draw, they will need a favour from other venues.

Meanwhile, Rovers FC—who suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to First Bank this evening—remain just two points behind Osun United, sitting on 31 points. Next weekend, Rovers FC will host Solution FC in a game that could see them snatch the final Super 8 slot, but only if Osun United falters against First Bank. The permutations are clear: Rovers need to win and hope First Bank either defeats or at least holds Osun United to a draw in Ile-Ogbo.

As the Southern Conference braces for one last round of twists and turns, fans can expect fireworks, heartbreak, and heroic performances as the battle for the Super 8’s final ticket reaches its climax. Stay tuned as the NNL season finale promises to deliver football at its most unpredictable and thrilling.
