Nigerian athletics has a new star in its ranks—and she’s only just getting started. Meet Kelly Ufodiama, the 19-year-old sprinting sensation who recently made headlines at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, clocking a blistering 22.61s (+0.7) in the 200m.

What makes this even more remarkable? Kelly officially switched allegiance from the United States to Nigeria just last month, and she’s already setting the track ablaze.

A freshman at East Carolina University, Ufodiama has been turning heads in both the collegiate and global athletics scenes. Her performances aren’t just promising—they’re historic. She boasts personal bests of 11.15s in the 100m and 22.54s in the 200m, the latter achieved at the NCAA East Prelims in Florida. That 22.54s doesn’t just stand as her fastest time to date—it’s also well under the qualification standard for the World Championships.

To put her brilliance in perspective, that 22.54s time makes her the second-fastest U20 female sprinter in the world so far this year. Let that sink in.

Kelly’s story isn’t just about numbers—it’s about range, ambition, and raw talent. Before committing full-time to sprinting, she was a dual-sport athlete in high school, juggling basketball with track. Now, she’s channelling that athleticism into making Nigeria proud on the world stage.

As Nigeria continues to build depth in its sprinting ranks, Ufodiama is emerging as one of the key figures in a new generation of athletes. With the World Championships around the corner and Olympic dreams on the horizon, Kelly Ufodiama might just be the breakout name to watch in global track and field.

The baton has officially been passed—and Nigeria’s next sprint queen is already accelerating toward greatness.
