In one of the most dramatic closing days of the Nigeria National League (NNL) Southern Conference season, Abakaliki FC bid farewell to the division despite pulling off the biggest away win of the season. Their emphatic victory over Madiba FC at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos—a 4-1 triumph that had fans and pundits talking—wasn’t enough to secure survival.

Dubbed the “Rice Boys” by their passionate fanbase, Abakaliki FC walked into Lagos knowing only a win would give them a fighting chance. They delivered just that against a Madiba side who were also staring at the drop. Ironically, both teams would end up relegated by the end of the evening.

In the tension-filled relegation mix were First Bank FC, ABS FC, Gateway United, Gods’will Akpabio United, and the now-relegated Abakaliki FC and Madiba FC. Over in Ile Ogbo, First Bank FC suffered a 3-1 defeat but escaped relegation due to Madiba’s loss in Lagos. It was a narrow, almost miraculous survival.

One of the day’s most emotional moments came from Uyo, where Gods’will Akpabio United thrashed Gateway United 3-0—a result that ended Gateway’s incredible 15-year unbroken run in the NNL. It was a shocking, poignant conclusion to a once-formidable club’s campaign.

As the Southern Conference Group B concludes, the relegated teams are confirmed:

  • Abakaliki FC
  • Madiba FC
  • Gateway United

They join Group A sides Igbajo United and 1472 FC (who withdrew mid-season) on the list of relegated teams. The last relegation spot in Group A hangs in the balance between Dakkada SC (17 points) and Ijele FC (15 points), with their final clash later today set to decide the outcome.

This final day of reckoning reminds fans just how unforgiving the NNL can be and how thin the line is between survival and heartbreak.
