A Strategic Start to a Festival of National Unity

The inauguration was headlined by the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, who praised Enugu State Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for his proactive and visionary leadership.

“With the inauguration of this high-powered committee, we are confident that the Coal City Games will raise the bar in excellence, inclusion, and legacy,” said Olopade, reaffirming the NSC’s commitment to supporting the 2026 festival.

Who’s Steering the Festival?

The LOC is chaired by Lloyd Ike Ekweremadu Jr., the Enugu State Commissioner for Youth and Sports. The committee boasts a robust lineup of experienced professionals, ensuring that all angles of festival planning—from logistics to legacy—are covered.

Key members include:

  • Mary Onyali – Nigerian Olympic legend
  • Aku Akazu – Sports lawyer
  • Davidson Owumi – Chief Operating Officer, NPFL
  • Blessing Chisalam Ekwe – Badminton Federation official

These figures bring credibility, strategy, and sports intelligence to the planning process, assuring Nigerians of a festival that will exceed expectations.

Enugu’s Vision: Infrastructure, Inclusion, and Economic Growth

Governor Mbah unveiled a far-reaching plan for Enugu 2026. The blueprint includes:

  • A brand-new Games Village
  • Remodeled stadiums upgraded to international standards
  • New sports infrastructure across the state
  • Engagement of local vendors, contractors, and creatives

This approach not only ensures a world-class sporting experience but also amplifies local economic development and celebrates Enugu’s rich cultural heritage.

“This festival is not just about medals and sports—it’s about putting Enugu on the global map and using sports as a catalyst for unity and economic transformation,” Mbah stated.

The Bigger Picture: Renewed Hope Through Sports

Scheduled for 2026, the National Sports Festival will bring together thousands of athletes from Nigeria’s 36 states and the FCT. Enugu’s edition is designed to reflect President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, using sports as a tool for youth empowerment, national cohesion, and grassroots development.
