The countdown to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) has officially begun, and Nigeria is once again setting its sights on gold. Head Coach Justine Madugu has unveiled a 24-player Super Falcons squad brimming with international pedigree, youthful energy, and a burning hunger to reclaim the title for a record-extending 10th time.

Leading the pack is captain and midfield maestro Rasheedat Ajibade, fresh from her contract stint with Atlético Madrid. She’s joined by ever-reliable shot-stopper Chiamaka Nnadozie, who recently completed her time with Paris FC, and iconic forwards Francisca Ordega and Asisat Oshoala, who bring vast experience and attacking flair to the team.

The roster reflects a smart mix of veterans, returnees, and emerging talents. Defender Ashleigh Plumptre, currently with Ittihad Ladies in Saudi Arabia, and US-based fan favourite Michelle Alozie are back to bolster the backline. Also included is seasoned defender Osinachi Ohale, plying her trade in Mexico, and a sturdy midfield featuring Deborah Abiodun, Jennifer Echegini, and Christy Ucheibe, who have consistently impressed in top European and American leagues.

There’s also space for home-grown stars. Nasarawa Amazons’ goalkeeper Rachael Unachukwu, alongside defenders Sikiratu Isah and Miracle Usani of Edo Queens, have earned deserved spots. Notably, Halimatu Ayinde returns to the team, bringing valuable composure and midfield grit from Sweden’s FC Rosenborg.

The Super Falcons began their final leg of preparations with a mini-camp in Abuja, training from Thursday through Saturday before jetting off to Lisbon, Portugal, where they will fine-tune tactics and test strength against elite opposition.

To sharpen their readiness, the Nigeria Football Federation has arranged two top-tier friendlies—first against Portugal’s senior women’s team on Monday, June 23, in Lisbon, and later against fierce West African rivals Ghana on Sunday, June 29, in Morocco.

The tournament itself kicks off in Morocco from July 5 to July 26, with Nigeria placed in Group B alongside Tunisia, Botswana, and Algeria. All matches will be held at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca.

As Nigeria eyes its 10th WAFCON title, the blend of global stars and home-based warriors under Coach Madugu’s leadership signals a bold statement of intent. The mission is clear: conquer Africa again.
