In the face of disappointment, true character often shines. Nigerian forward Gift Monday, who currently stars for Washington Spirit in the United States, has responded with poise and patriotism after being omitted from the Super Falcons’ 24-player squad for the upcoming 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Contrary to speculations that injury ruled her out of the continental showpiece, Gift Monday has publicly clarified that she is fit, healthy, and still passionately committed to wearing the green and white.

In a heartfelt message shared on her Instagram page, she acknowledged the emotional weight of missing out, but also emphasized her unbroken spirit and continued love for the Nigerian national team.
“Sometimes the hardest moments reveal the strengths of our heart,” she began.
“I have seen the official list of the forthcoming WAFCON tournament and yes, my name isn’t on it. While it is hurtful and tough to swallow, I want to make it clear that I hold no grudges, no resentment.”
Gift’s message silenced whispers surrounding a possible injury, instead affirming her readiness to play and her ongoing dedication to Nigeria.
“I am hale and hearty, fully fit and still deeply in love with the game and the green white green,” she stated.
Despite not making the final cut by head coach Justine Madugu, who named the likes of Rasheedat Ajibade, Francisca Ordega, Asisat Oshoala, and Chiamaka Nnadozie, Gift Monday vowed to support her teammates from the sidelines with the same intensity she brings to the pitch.

“Though I won’t be on the pitch with the team in Morocco, my heart will be there every step of the way. I remain committed to cheering my country from home, lifting every prayer and every shout of support for the badge we all fight so hard to represent.”
She ended her emotional message with encouragement for her fellow Super Falcons, urging them to rise to the occasion and write a new chapter of history for Nigerian women’s football.
“To the incredible women who made the squad, go out there and make history. Let your passion roar. Let your pride show. You carry the hopes of millions—including mine. I’ll be watching. I’ll be believing. I’ll be back.”
