In a grand tribute to one of Nigeria’s most iconic football heroes, the Lagos State Football Association (Lagos FA) has announced that Biliaminu “Billy” Thanni, a legendary winger from the golden era of Stationery Stores Football Club, will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award this weekend.

Thanni, now 80 years old, is the oldest living winner of the prestigious President Federation Cup, Nigeria’s longest-running and most revered knockout football competition. His standout performance in the 1982 Federation Cup final is still vividly remembered by Nigerian football fans. Playing for the beloved “Flaming Flamingoes” of Stationery Stores, Thanni delivered a masterclass of pace and flair, helping his side thrash Niger Tornadoes 4-1 at the National Stadium in Lagos.

That memorable victory etched Thanni’s name into the history books, not just for his footballing brilliance but also for representing the spirit of Lagos football: passionate, vibrant, and legendary.

Now, over four decades later, Lagos FA will spotlight that legacy once more during the 2025 President Federation Cup grand finale scheduled for this Saturday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan.

The event promises to be a celebration of both past and present as the Men’s final between Kwara United and Abakaliki FC and the Women’s final featuring Rivers Angels and Nasarawa Amazons take centre stage. But in the midst of competitive football, all eyes will also be on the award ceremony honouring Thanni’s lifelong contribution to the game.

Speaking ahead of the event, Lagos FA Chairman Hajji Gafar Liameed described the award as part of an ongoing mission to recognize those who shaped the legacy of football in Lagos and across Nigeria.

“This award is a symbol of our deep appreciation for heroes like Billy Thanni, who laid the foundation for the beautiful game we cherish today,” Liameed stated. “It is also a call to action for our current and future stars, a reminder that their legacy is being watched, and excellence will always be rewarded.”

In addition to the honorary plaque, Thanni will also receive a substantial cash prize as a token of the state’s gratitude.

This honour is a key part of Lagos FA’s broader commitment to celebrating football heritage, not just through trophies and tournaments, but through storytelling and remembrance.
