Engineer Adams Salauddin, Chairman of the Lagos State Football Referees Council, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai, who passed away yesterday morning after a long illness.
In an emotional tribute, Engineer Salauddin shared how Rufai, fondly known as Dodo Mayana, played a pivotal role in shaping his early years as a goalkeeper. Although they never met during those formative days, Rufai’s legendary presence between the goalposts ignited a spark that would influence Salauddin’s football journey.

As a young player growing up in Northern Nigeria, Adams Salauddin admired Peter Rufai’s style, athleticism, and confidence. He would go on to play for several grassroots clubs before turning professional with teams like ITF Football Club Jos, JUTH FC, Zabgai FC of Bauchi, and Wunti FC. Despite a promising career, he made the difficult decision to pursue education over a potential call-up to the national U17 team.
Salauddin eventually transitioned from being a goalkeeper to a referee. He officiated games at the elite Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) level before retiring and becoming a respected Referee Assessor.

Looking back, he fondly recalled copying Rufai’s signature style, the long-sleeved jersey and black fitted trousers tucked into white socks, a look that made young keepers feel invincible. “He made saves that were not for ordinary mortals,” Salauddin said. “The way he defied gravity inspired us. He was our superhero.”
Though they only met once in person, when Rufai was sourcing referees for a football program, Salauddin described the encounter as humbling. “He was so nice and approachable. I was surprised at how genial he was in real life.”

Reflecting on Rufai’s impact, he added:
“Peter Rufai was not just a legend; he was our role model, our no-nonsense guardian of the goalpost. Many of us became goalkeepers because of him. His legacy will live on in every Nigerian kid who dreams of being a great keeper. May his soul rest in peace.”
Peter Rufai will be remembered as one of Nigeria’s greatest goalkeepers—a national icon whose passion, charisma, and excellence inspired generations.
