The race to join Nigeria’s top-flight football league is still wide open as Day 2 of the Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 8 playoff concluded in Asaba with high-octane action across all four fixtures. Remarkably, every one of the eight participating teams retains a mathematical chance of earning promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), setting up a high-stakes final matchday on Thursday.
Yobe Desert Stars Roar Back Against Doma United
In the Northern Conference’s opening fixture, Yobe Desert Stars showed resilience and character, coming from behind to defeat Doma United 2-1.
The match began with a moment of brilliance from Doma United, as John Zauka found the net in the 17th minute, converting a low cross from Abdullahi Abubakar. Yobe’s reply came in the 59th minute through substitute Yakubu Abdullahi, who made an instant impact by leveling the scores. The game seemed destined for a draw until Umar Idris rose highest to nod home a dramatic winner from a corner in the dying moments.
With four points from two matches, Yobe Desert Stars now lead the Northern Conference. A draw in their final group game against Wikki Tourists will be enough to seal their return to the NPFL.

Warri Wolves Stun Kun Khalifa in Southern Conference Shocker
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day came in the Southern Conference, where Warri Wolves stunned Kun Khalifa FC with a dominant 3-0 victory. Kun Khalifa had entered the match with confidence after a 1-0 win over Crown FC and boasting a solid defensive record, having conceded only 13 goals throughout the regular season. But that defensive discipline crumbled under pressure.
Jude Ebohon opened the scoring in just the second minute with a header, and later doubled his tally with a composed penalty in the 38th minute. Okiemute Akporaye sealed the emphatic win in the 67th minute with a well-taken goal.
Warri Wolves now have three points and a renewed sense of belief as they prepare to face Crown FC in their final match.

Osun United Secure Last-Gasp Draw Against Crown FC
The day’s final fixture delivered all the intensity expected from a Southwest derby. Osun United, brimming with confidence after their Matchday 1 win over Warri Wolves, knew a victory would secure early promotion to the NPFL. However, they found themselves trailing after Wasiu Falolu broke the deadlock for Crown FC in the 55th minute.
Osun’s task was made even harder when Gabriel was sent off in the 60th minute, leaving them with ten men. But they refused to give up. Deep into stoppage time, Abolude fired in a dramatic equalizer in the 95th minute to salvage a 1-1 draw.
Osun United remain top of the Southern Conference with four points. A draw in their final match against Kun Khalifa will see them through to the NPFL.
