The Nigerian women’s national football team maintained their perfect start to the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a narrow but crucial 1-0 victory over Botswana in their second Group B match.
Played at a brisk pace and under pressure to build on their opening win, the Super Falcons found Botswana to be a resilient and well-organized opponent. However, Christy Ucheibe’s introduction at the start of the second half and the eventual heroics from Christy Ihezuo turned the tide in Nigeria’s favour.

Cagey First Half Ends Goalless
Despite dominating possession with a commanding 70%, the Super Falcons struggled to convert control into clear-cut chances in the first half. Botswana were disciplined defensively, and Nigeria’s attacking rhythm was disrupted by misplaced final balls.
Botswana’s Baeletsi Nfila went into the referee’s book in the 41st minute, one of several signs of frustration from the underdogs as they tried to hold their own against the continental giants.

Second-Half Substitutions Spark Momentum
Coach Justin Madugu made early changes in the second half, bringing on Esther Okoronkwo, Ihezuo and Ucheibe for Asisat Oshoala, Babajide and Oyedupe Payne, respectively. The attacking adjustments increased Nigeria’s tempo, with much of the play now concentrated in Botswana’s half.
Still, Nigeria had to remain patient. A second yellow card of the match came for Deborah Abiodun in the 55th minute.
As time wore on, Jennifer Echegini also joined the fray, replacing Abiodun in the 85th minute, a substitution that added further creativity to the midfield.

Ihezuo Delivers in the Dying Minutes
The breakthrough finally came in the 89th minute when Christy Ihezuo capitalized on a well-timed pass from Okoronkwo and calmly slotted home what would be the game’s only goal. The late finish was a reward for Nigeria’s persistence and tactical superiority.
Match Statistics Tell the Story
Although the scoreline remained close, Nigeria’s dominance was evident on paper. The Falcons completed 173 passes at a 75% accuracy rate compared to Botswana’s 104 passes at 53% accuracy. Nigeria also had eight total shots to Botswana’s six, with one big chance created—the match-winner.
The result leaves Nigeria atop Group B with six points, four goals scored, and none conceded. They will now face Algeria in their final group-stage encounter, needing only a draw to top the group and progress to the knockout rounds.
