Veteran Super Eagles midfielder John Ogu is on the brink of a sensational return to Nigerian domestic football, with Rivers United reportedly in advanced talks to secure his signature ahead of the 2025–2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.

At 37, Ogu could soon join the growing list of Nigerian internationals who have made a homecoming to the NPFL in recent seasons. The likes of Ahmed Musa, Shehu Abdullahi, and Brown Ideye have all featured in the domestic league after illustrious careers abroad.

According to sources close to Rivers United, discussions with Ogu are progressing steadily, and a deal is expected to be finalized soon. The move signals an ambitious push by the Pride of Rivers to bolster their midfield with proven quality and experience.

John Ogu’s journey in football began in Nigeria with Akwa Starlets, before he moved on to Akwa United and later the Flying Sports Academy. His professional breakthrough came in 2006 with Slovenian side Drava Ptuj, where he played 97 matches and scored 8 goals over four seasons.

From there, Ogu’s career took him across Europe, with spells in Portugal, Spain, and notably Israel, where he became a key figure for Hapoel Be’er Sheva, winning multiple league titles and establishing himself as a technically gifted and versatile midfielder.

On the international scene, John Ogu earned his first Super Eagles call-up in March 2013 and made his debut in a World Cup qualifier against Kenya, replacing the injured Victor Moses. He went on to earn 26 caps for the Nigerian national team, scoring one goal and featuring in several major tournaments.

Should this move be finalized, Ogu’s return would not only strengthen Rivers United’s squad but also inject valuable leadership into the league. For a team with continental ambitions, adding a player of Ogu’s pedigree could prove to be a masterstroke.

As Nigerian football continues to attract returning stars, John Ogu’s homecoming could serve as further inspiration for young talents and a testament to the growing appeal of the NPFL.
