The Ijebu Ode centre of the Nationwide League One (NLO) playoff burst into life on Saturday morning with a fiery clash between Magic Stars FC and Franceex United. In a game that held more than just points at stake, Magic Stars emerged victorious with a 2-1 win, setting the tone for what promises to be a compelling playoff series.

The match opened with intensity as both teams tried to find rhythm under the early morning sun. It didn’t take long for tensions to rise. Franceex United’s Annur Saadu received a yellow card in the 12th minute for a reckless challenge, while teammate Bernard Odey joined him in the referee’s book shortly before halftime for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Despite the physical battle, the first half ended goalless with neither side able to break the deadlock.

Magic Stars, however, returned from the break with renewed purpose. In the 53rd minute, Udauk Joseph lit up the Ijebu Ode stadium with a sublime finish that sent fans into a frenzy. Just five minutes later, Sesan Emmanuel doubled the lead, converting a swift attacking move that left Franceex United’s backline scrambling.

Although Franceex clawed one back in the 81st minute through Elijah Tarilayefa, it proved too little, too late. Magic Stars held on for a deserved win, showcasing their readiness for the demanding playoff round.

The Franceex Controversy:

This game marked a dramatic return to the playoff stage for Franceex United, who were previously disqualified by the NLO on allegations of match-fixing. The club was replaced by Okaka FC, but a decision from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Disciplinary Committee overturned the ruling, reinstating Franceex into the competition.

Unfortunately for the reinstated team, their lack of preparation may have shown. While there is still time to bounce back, the defeat raises questions about their playoff readiness, especially with tough fixtures against Ikorodu City FA and Lekki United still to come.

As the Ijebu Ode playoff action continues, fans will be watching closely to see whether Magic Stars can maintain their momentum and whether Franceex United can recover from this rocky start.
