Algeria pulled off one of the most memorable results in their women’s football history as they held giants Nigeria to a goalless draw to book their place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The match, played at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, was a defensive masterclass from the North Africans and a night of frustration for the Super Falcons.
Despite Nigeria dominating possession and chances, it was Algeria who celebrated at full-time. The result saw them advance to the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time ever, finishing second in Group B with five points, behind Nigeria who topped the group with seven.

Nigeria’s Rotation and Missed Opportunities
The Super Falcons had already qualified for the knockout stage prior to the encounter and opted to rotate their squad, giving opportunities to several fringe players. Yet, the quality of Nigeria’s attack remained evident, with Francisca Ordega, Rasheedat Ajibade and Esther Okoronkwo all testing the Algerian backline throughout the match.
However, the breakthrough never came. Algeria’s defense remained compact, disciplined, and determined — and at the heart of it was goalkeeper Chloé N’Gazi. Her performance was nothing short of heroic, especially in the final moments when she denied Okoronkwo’s thunderous header to preserve the clean sheet.
Nigeria, who had previously scored four goals and conceded none in the group, were left visibly disappointed by their inability to convert dominance into goals.

A Game of Strategy, Resilience and Heart
Nigeria’s coach Justin Madugu took a philosophical approach to the result, noting the positives:
“Every match gives us something new. We rotated the squad, maintained a clean sheet, and learned to grind out results when the goals don’t come.”
For Algeria, the draw felt like a victory. Entering the tournament as underdogs, they’ve now reached uncharted territory.
Coach Farid Benstiti praised his players’ mental strength and organization:
“We knew it would take a perfect defensive game to hold Nigeria. I’m proud of the girls – they showed heart and tactical maturity.”

Nigeria will face the runners-up from Group A in their next challenge, while Algeria prepare for their historic quarter-final appearance. With their confidence high and belief unshaken, Algeria’s journey in Morocco is far from over.
