In a bold step towards strengthening youth sports development, Nigeria has confirmed its participation in the maiden edition of the African School Games set to hold from July 26 to August 5, 2025, in Algeria.
The groundbreaking event, spearheaded by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), marks a significant milestone for grassroots sports across the continent. For Nigeria, it is more than just another international outing—it’s a chance to shine a spotlight on young talents while fostering continental unity through sport.

A New Era for Nigerian Youth in Sports
“This is a milestone opportunity for Nigeria to showcase and nurture its school-age sporting talents on a continental stage,” stated Hon. Bukola Olopade, the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC). He emphasized the Commission’s readiness to work closely with the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), school authorities, and parents to ensure seamless preparation and strong representation for Team Nigeria.
10 Sports, One Goal: National Pride
Team Nigeria will compete in 10 sporting disciplines, namely:
- Athletics
- Badminton
- Basketball
- Beach Volleyball
- Canoeing
- Football
- Swimming
- Table Tennis
- Cycling
- Taekwondo
The Games Village will officially open on July 23, allowing participants and Chefs de Mission to settle in ahead of the competition.

Investing in the Future of Sports
Olopade spoke passionately about the NSC’s “renewed hope” mandate driven by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritizes youth engagement and equal opportunity across all sports.
“Since assuming office, 21 national sports federations have represented Nigeria abroad, a clear signal that no sport is being left behind,” he said. “We are building a sports economy that empowers youth and secures Nigeria’s future on global podiums.”

Safeguarding Student-Athletes
To participate, all athletes must provide a valid school certificate, in line with the Games’ eligibility requirements. The NSC and NOC will also collaborate with parents to obtain necessary paternal consent for minors.
A Platform for Integration and Olympic Values
The African School Games is the first of its kind dedicated solely to school-age athletes in Africa. The mission is profound—identify future stars, promote unity, and embed Olympic values of excellence, solidarity, and friendship.
