The 2024/2025 Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 8 Final was expected to be a showcase of football excellence. Instead, it turned into a cautionary tale, with Wikki Tourists FC at the centre of an ugly incident that has now drawn heavy financial penalties.

The Bauchi-based club has been fined a total of ₦3.75 million for a string of unruly actions that marred their Super 8 clash with Warri Wolves FC at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba on July 12, 2025. The match, which was supposed to mark a triumphant conclusion to the promotion playoffs, descended into chaos due to the behaviour of Wikki Tourists’ supporters and officials.

According to a disciplinary letter issued by the NNL and signed by its Chief Operating Officer, Danlami Alanana, the conduct of Wikki Tourists was not only below professional standards but also posed a serious threat to match officials, spectators, and the integrity of the competition itself.

The report detailed how fans threw objects at Assistant Referee II and disrupted the flow of the game by creating a hostile environment. The situation took a dangerous turn after the final whistle, when Wikki Tourists supporters reportedly stormed the pitch, attempting to confront match officials and league personnel.

Their actions caused widespread panic, including among VIP guests and dignitaries, and left a dark cloud over what should have been a celebration of sporting achievement.

In response, the NNL invoked Articles 16.1.1 and 27.1 of its league regulations, levying the following fines:

  • ₦1,000,000 for general disturbances involving both club officials and supporters
  • ₦2,000,000 for harassment, intimidation, object-throwing, and the pitch invasion
  • ₦750,000 for damage to the stadium, including broken panels and vandalized advertisement boards

Wikki Tourists have been given a 24-hour window to either accept the sanctions or lodge a formal appeal.

In a strongly worded statement, Alanana remarked:

“The actions of your supporters really jeopardized the beauty and glamour of a reputable final of the competition of that magnitude.”

The incident has sparked renewed conversations around fan behaviour, stadium security, and the responsibility of clubs to manage their supporters in high-stakes fixtures.
