Victory is becoming a way of life for the CATS Ladies, and at the heart of their success is a woman quietly building a dynasty from the grassroots up—Coach Chinasa Mandy Ukandu.
After conquering the WAFA League, Lagos’ leading grassroots women’s football competition, the CATS Ladies have now added another jewel to their crown—the Lagos State Women’s League title. At the centre of this impressive run is Chinasa Ukandu, a seasoned coach and educator with deep roots in the game. She’s not just coaching a team—she’s shaping a generation. Mandy has been part of Community Action Through Sports (CATS) since 2003, and in 2019, she was globally recognized when she was selected as a winner of the WorldRemit/Arsenal “Future Stars” Coaching Programme.

“This League Gives Girls a Platform to Shine”
“I’m happy this competition exists because it gives the girls a platform to showcase their talent,” Coach Mandy said. “It’s a strong initiative from the state, and I hope it continues. I also hope they improve on some of the lapses noticed during the group stages. Overall, it has been very competitive, and all the teams performed well.”
CATS Ladies Aim Higher
On the next phase for her team, Coach Ukandu said, “We’re aiming for the championship stage. The girls need to face tougher challenges so they can continue to grow. They are conquering at this level, and now it’s time to push them further.”

Coach Ukandu also noted areas for improvement: “Every competition has its lapses. Officiating can be better; referees should arrive early, and Match Commissioners should always be available. I believe the organizing committee has taken note and will improve next season.”
