The Flying Eagles of Nigeria saw their WAFU B U20 title hopes dashed in the final moments of a tense contest on Wednesday as a late goal gifted Cote d’Ivoire a dramatic 1-0 victory in Accra, Ghana.

It was a final that matched expectations in intensity and grit. The young Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire, who had displayed incredible discipline and dominance throughout the tournament, were finally rewarded with the championship thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Zakaria Tindano. His quick reaction punished a rare error by Nigerian goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt, whose fumble from a set piece allowed Tindano to poke home the only goal of the match.

The result capped off a flawless run for the Ivorian side, who marched through the tournament unbeaten. They opened their campaign with a 2-1 win over Burkina Faso, followed by narrow but efficient wins against Niger Republic and Togo in the group stage. In the semifinal, they came from behind to stun host nation Ghana 2-1, showcasing their never-say-die spirit.

For Nigeria, the final loss was a bitter pill to swallow. The Flying Eagles, seven-time African champions at U20 level, were determined and difficult to break down. But a momentary lapse at the death proved costly. Despite their exit, the young Nigerians earned respect for their resilient performance against a highly organized Ivorian team.

This latest WAFU B U20 championship edition not only reinforced Côte d’Ivoire’s rising profile in youth football but also served as a reminder of the fine margins that separate success from heartbreak on the continental stage.

As both teams now set their sights on future continental and global tournaments, the final in Accra will remain a powerful chapter in the story of West African youth football.
