Nigeria’s Super Eagles B team will mark their long-awaited return to the African Nations Championship (CHAN) with a blockbuster Group D opener against reigning champions Senegal on Tuesday evening. The highly anticipated match is scheduled for 6 PM Nigeria time at the 15,000-seater Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar City.

The fixture not only signals Nigeria’s return to CHAN after missing the 2020 and 2022 editions but also marks the first-ever CHAN encounter between the West African football powerhouses Nigeria and Senegal. For fans, this isn’t just another group-stage match—it’s a clash laced with pride, history, and redemption.

Nigeria’s Fresh Start After Years in the Wilderness

Having finished third in 2014 and as runners-up in 2018, expectations are high for the Super Eagles B, now led by coach Eric Chelle. The squad, made up exclusively of players from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), includes standout talents like striker Sikiru Alimi, midfield maestro Michael Tochukwu, and reliable shot-stopper Ozoemena Ani.

Coach Chelle, speaking during the pre-match press conference, expressed confidence despite the squad losing key players like Papa Daniel to overseas transfers just days before the tournament.

“Our preparation has been good, and we plan to bring everything we’ve worked on into this match,” Chelle assured. “This is not just a West African derby. It’s a meeting between two great footballing nations, and we’re ready.”

Senegal Faces Disruption as Key Player Suffers Injury

Senegal, fresh off their 2022 CHAN title, face early adversity. First-choice goalkeeper Idris Ndiaye has been ruled out due to injury, forcing head coach Souleymane Diallo to call up Cheikh Lô Ndoye as a late replacement. This change could shake up their defensive rhythm in a fixture that demands composure.

Yet, the Lions of Teranga are seasoned competitors. Their experience at this level cannot be underestimated, and the Super Eagles B must match them in tactical discipline and mental strength.

Spotlight on Nigeria’s Rising Talents

All eyes will also be on young guns Leonard Ngenge and Adedayo Olamilekan, whose flair and fearlessness could provide Nigeria with a crucial edge. Their ability to inject energy from midfield or wide areas could prove decisive against a Senegalese team known for its physicality and compact defense.

Coach Chelle, however, remains focused on the task ahead: “We’re not looking beyond Senegal right now. One game at a time. That’s how tournaments are won.”

CHAN 2024 Format Demands Fast Start

Group D comprises just four teams—Nigeria, Senegal, Congo, and Sudan—making every match a must-win. With only two spots available for progression, Tuesday’s fixture could go a long way in shaping the group.

CHAN 2024, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, is already delivering high drama. On Monday, Algeria fired an early warning shot by comfortably defeating co-host Uganda 3-0 in Group C, while Guinea edged Niger 1-0 in a tight contest.

The Super Eagles B now have the opportunity to make their own statement. A strong start against Senegal could rekindle belief in Nigeria’s CHAN ambitions.
