Flying Eagles Set Sights on Morocco: Bameyi Leads Nigeria’s Charge for AFCON U-20 Glory

Captain Daniel Bameyi confident of victory as Nigeria's U-20 team prepares for a pivotal Group B showdown at the 2025 AFCON in Cairo

With their eyes set firmly on a seventh continental title, Nigeria’s Flying Eagles are gearing up for a vital encounter against Morocco in the ongoing 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Cairo, Egypt. Team captain Daniel Bameyi has expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to secure another victory and climb to the top of Group B.

The Flying Eagles got off to a solid start on Thursday night, dispatching Tunisia with a narrow 1-0 win at the Cairo International Stadium. The game’s standout moment came in the 38th minute when midfielder Auwal Ibrahim netted what turned out to be the winning goal, capping off a strong team performance.

Speaking to reporters ahead of Sunday’s second group match against Morocco, Bameyi, who plays his club football with Bayelsa United, was optimistic about the team’s momentum.

“It is on to the next game. We hope to win and go to the top of our group on our way to qualifying for the World Cup and winning the tournament,” Bameyi said.

Morocco, who sit atop Group B after a narrow 3-2 win over Kenya in their opening fixture, will pose a tough challenge. However, the Flying Eagles are no strangers to pressure. Under head coach Aliyu Zubairu, the team has shown tactical discipline and attacking flair, elements that could be key against a Moroccan side known for its pace and technical strength.

The next fixture takes place at the June 30 Stadium in Cairo on Sunday — a clash that could shape the destiny of both teams in this tournament. For Nigeria, a win not only ensures progression to the knockout stages but also strengthens their quest for a place at the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

As excitement builds, fans across Nigeria will be hoping that the Flying Eagles soar once again, carrying the nation’s hopes on their young shoulders.
