Team Lagos has written its name in golden letters in Nigerian sports history by winning the overall championship of the 9th National Youth Games in Asaba. It is the first time since the inception of the Under-15 competition in 2013 that Lagos has claimed the crown, ending Delta State’s unbroken dominance.
With a commanding haul of 51 gold, 31 silver, and 24 bronze medals, Lagos finished ahead of Edo State, which earned 33 gold, 16 silver, and 27 bronze. Perennial winners Delta settled for third place with 32 gold, 36 silver, and 39 bronze.

The breakthrough was not a stroke of luck. Team Lagos excelled across a wide range of sports, including swimming, gymnastics, athletics, cycling, boxing, football, basketball, volleyball, chess, and even wushu-kungfu. This spread of talent shows the depth of preparation and the strength of grassroots development within the state.
Speaking after the historic victory, the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Hon. Lekan Fatodu, praised the athletes, coaches, and officials for their resilience and discipline. He attributed the success to the consistent investments made by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration in infrastructure, scouting, and nurturing young talent.

“This triumph is proof that we have regained our rightful status as the powerhouse of developmental sports in Nigeria,” Fatodu declared.
The victory represents more than just medals. From football pitches in Surulere to swimming pools in Yaba, Lagos continues to serve as the breeding ground for the nation’s future champions.
