The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has officially dismissed viral reports alleging that a Barau FC player, Abraham Nana, had his throat slit during the Matchday 12 encounter against Katsina United at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina.

In a statement released on Saturday, the League management described the reports as “utterly false and misleading,” clarifying that the incident was a case of crowd disturbance that led to a player being struck by a foreign object from the stands.

“The player was hurt by an object hauled from the stands and was treated on the pitch, which led to the match being halted for a few minutes,” the NPFL explained.

The League added that the player sustained no life-threatening injuries and received immediate medical attention before play resumed.

According to the NPFL, its Situation Room was in real-time contact with the Match Commissioner and both clubs’ officials throughout the incident. The body also emphasized that its coordination systems are designed to ensure quick response and effective crowd control during league matches.

“The NPFL Office maintains an active Situation Room with all Match Commissioners, and through this medium, we monitor and direct affairs to ensure smooth operations,” the statement read.

Following an official review of match reports submitted by the referee and the Match Commissioner, the NPFL confirmed that Katsina United had been sanctioned for breaches of league regulations. However, the League did not disclose the nature of the sanctions.

The League management reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy for misconduct and restated its commitment to maintaining discipline, fairness, and safety across all match venues.

“The NPFL will continue to uphold the rules to ensure fair competition and an exciting league under a safe atmosphere. The public is once again reassured of safety at our matches through control measures put in place,” the statement concluded.

The clarification comes amid growing public concern over player and fan safety in domestic football. The NPFL’s prompt response highlights its determination to preserve integrity and order within the league as it continues to strengthen matchday security and disciplinary procedures.
