The 2025–2026 Nigeria Women’s Football League Premiership season kicked off across nine centres on Wednesday, producing a powerful reminder of why the NWFL has become one of the continent’s most competitive women’s leagues. With late goals, tight defensive duels, shock victories, and emotional post-match reflections, Matchday One provided drama in every zone.

But no story stood out more than in Akure, where FC Robo Queens of Lagos claimed the only away victory of the opening round. A composed finish from Marvellous Oladuni just before halftime earned the Lagos side a deserved 1–0 win over Sunshine Queens, a result that immediately places them among the early contenders this season.

Naija Ratels Begin with Grit and Belief in Abuja

In Abuja, the capital’s only top-flight side, Naija Ratels, opened their campaign with a tense goalless draw against an experienced Ibom Angels team. Although the scoreline was blank, the match was anything but empty.

The Ratels played with urgency, pace, and emotional clarity, showing the personality that coach Sabo Okala has been building over the past year. Missed chances would haunt them, but the performance earned admiration from the faithful who filled the Bwari Stadium stands.

Coach Okala described the outing as “very, very encouraging,” praising his youthful side for competing fearlessly.

“You expect minor lapses from a young team, but the positives are clear. If Ibom Angels can draw here, then we can go away and win. We go to Rivers Angels with confidence,” he said.

Ibom Angels coach Edwin Okon, relieved after a stressful trip marked by road accidents along the route, felt his side should have left Abuja with more.

“It is two points dropped, even though the character from my players gives us something to build on,” he noted.

Bayelsa Queens 3–2 Edo Queens

Perhaps the most dramatic fixture of the day.
Edo Queens struck first through Adegbemile Rebecca, but Bayelsa equalised through Kindness Ifeanyi at the brink of halftime.

Janet Akekoromowei put the hosts ahead early in the second half before Edo Queens clawed back with a stoppage-time goal from Adanna Nwachukwu.

But in one final twist, Bayelsa won a late penalty, and Blessing Illevida stepped up confidently to secure an electrifying victory.

Umuahia

Ahudiyannem Queens 0–0 Remo Stars Ladies

A tight defensive contest ended scoreless as both sides looked well structured but lacked ruthlessness in front of goal.

Lagos

Dannaz Ladies 3–2 Osun Babes

A five-goal battle saw Dannaz overturn an early deficit and dominate most of the first half.
With 62 percent possession and superior attacking numbers, they controlled the game even though Osun Babes mounted a late fight.

Nasarawa Amazons 2–1 Delta Queens
A second-half resurgence and a goalkeeping error turned the game around in favour of Nasarawa after Delta’s early lead.

A Season Already Promising Goals and Fire

With 28 goals scored across nine fixtures, the opening matchday signals an attacking season ahead. The expanded nineteen-team format also means more competition, more travel, and more opportunities for new stars to emerge.

For Naija Ratels, Matchday One was more than a draw. It was a statement of intent, a reminder that youth, discipline, and belief can build a season of significance.

As Matchday Two approaches, all eyes shift to Port Harcourt, where Ratels face Rivers Angels, one of the most decorated sides in the league. The battles have only just begun, and the NWFL Premiership is already alive with storylines.
