Nigeria’s contingents for the CAF African Schools Football Championship Zonal Qualifiers have officially departed the country this morning, marking the beginning of another chapter in the nation’s growing investment in school football development. The boys’ team is expected to compete in the WAFU B region as they chase a place in the continental finals.

The majority of the players and officials flew out of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, while others departed from the Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos. All contingents will converge in Abidjan for a stopover before being airlifted together to Ouagadougou, the host city for this year’s zonal tournament.

Nigeria has been placed in Group B alongside Côte d’Ivoire and the Republic of Benin. It is a competitive field, but one that offers a clear path to the semifinals for a disciplined and cohesive Nigerian side.

The selected players emerged from a nationwide school football system that continues to produce exceptional young talents. Representatives were drawn from schools that excelled during the National School Football Competition. Among them are Government Basic Education School Cantonment, Kaduna, National Grammar School Nike Enugu, and Ekiti Parapo College Ido Ekiti. These schools have built reputations for balancing academic excellence with structured football development.

For many of these young boys, this journey is bigger than a football competition. It is an opportunity to test their abilities against some of the brightest school talents in West Africa. It is also a platform that has historically opened pathways into national youth teams, football academies, scholarship programmes, and emerging scouting networks across the continent.

As Nigeria arrives in Ouagadougou, expectations remain high. The blend of tactical strength, raw ability, and strong school foundations offers real promise. The CAF African Schools Football Championship continues to grow in profile, and Nigeria’s new generation is eager to leave a lasting mark.
