Matchday Seventeen of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) delivered everything that defines the local game: grit, tension, late drama and results that could shape the season long before the final whistle in May.
From Ilorin to Minna and Aba to Benin City, teams digging deep on hostile grounds reminded everyone that there are no easy venues in the NPFL.

Abia Warriors grind out statement win in Ilorin
Abia Warriors continue to quietly build momentum this season, and their latest victory on the road may be one of their most significant yet.
Facing a stubborn Kun Khalifat side in Ilorin, the Umuahia-based club showed patience, discipline and belief. For eighty minutes the contest looked destined for a stalemate until Suraju Lawal rose to the occasion.
The midfielder struck in the 81st minute, sending the away supporters into wild celebrations and handing Abia Warriors a priceless one-nil victory. In a league where away wins are rare, such results often define campaigns.
Shooting Stars show maturity on the road
At Barau FC Shooting Stars Sports Club, once again proved that experience still counts in the NPFL.
The Oluyole Warriors wasted no time settling into the game as Sodiq Ibrahim struck as early as the 9th minute. That early goal changed the complexion of the contest and allowed the Ibadan giants to manage proceedings with calm authority.
Despite pressure from the hosts, Shooting Stars defended resolutely to secure another away victory that keeps them firmly in the title conversation.

Goalless battles in Warri and Jos
Not every game produced goals, but the intensity remained high.
Warri Wolves and Kano Pillars cancelled each other out in a tactical contest that ended scoreless. Both sides had moments, but neither could find the breakthrough in a match defined by defensive structure.
Plateau United and Nasarawa United also shared the points in Jos in another tightly contested encounter. While the scoreboard stayed blank, the result reflected how evenly matched both teams were on the day. The draw is enough to keep Nasarawa United on the summit of the table for 24 hours until Rivers United plays Wikki Tourist and Ikorodu City plays Katsina United on Monday evening.
Niger Tornadoes dominate in Minna
If there was a standout performance of the weekend, Niger Tornadoes made a strong case for it.
Playing at home in Minna, Tornadoes swept aside El Kanemi Warriors with a commanding 3-0 victory. Azeez Akintunde set the tone early, converting a penalty in the fifth minute.
As El Kanemi pushed forward in search of a response, Rickson Mendos punished them late on with two goals in the 79th and 83rd minutes to cap a dominant display.
Enyimba roar back in Aba
At the Enyimba International Stadium, the People’s Elephant reminded everyone why Aba remains one of the toughest grounds in the league.
Samuel Agu opened the scoring midway through the first half, but Kwara United responded through Toheeb Gidado to restore parity.
The second half belonged to Chidera Michael. His quick brace turned the match on its head and sealed a 3-1 victory that keeps Enyimba firmly in the title chase.
Late heartbreak for Bendel Insurance
The most dramatic moment of the weekend came in Benin City.
Bendel Insurance looked set for maximum points after Anyanwu put them ahead in the eightieth minute against Rangers International. The Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium was already celebrating when disaster struck deep into stoppage time.
An unfortunate own goal by Onyia in the ninety-third minute handed Rangers a lifeline and silenced the home crowd as the match ended one all.
The title race and relegation fight intensify
With Matchday Seventeen concluded, the NPFL table remains tightly packed at both ends. Away victories for Abia Warriors and Shooting Stars have reshaped the top half, while teams at the bottom continue to feel the pressure.
As the season gathers momentum, every point now carries extra weight, and weekends like this remind us why the NPFL remains one of Africa’s most unpredictable leagues.
