Nigeria’s rising stars have once again reminded Africa of the country’s enduring pedigree in table tennis, producing a performance filled with composure, confidence and quiet dominance to claim a prestigious gold medal at the 4th African Youth Games.

Competing in the mixed team event, Nigeria defeated continental powerhouse Egypt 2-0 in the final, a result that resonated loudly across the competition halls and confirmed the nation’s growing depth at youth level.

Represented by the impressive duo of Matthew Fabunmi and Ojo Favour, the Nigerian team showed no signs of intimidation against their highly rated opponents. Instead, they controlled the tempo, dictated rallies and executed their game plan with maturity well beyond their years.

From the opening exchanges of the final, it was clear Nigeria had arrived prepared. Fabunmi’s calm shot selection and tactical awareness blended seamlessly with Ojo’s energy and sharp reflexes, leaving Egypt struggling to impose themselves in a contest they are traditionally expected to dominate.

The 2-nil victory was not just a triumph of skill but of belief, discipline and mental strength.

Nigeria’s road to gold, however, was anything but straightforward.

The journey began in the quarterfinals, where the team brushed aside Tunisia with authority to secure a semifinal spot. That confidence was then tested against a stubborn Algerian side in a tense semifinal clash that demanded patience, resilience and nerve. In that encounter, Fabunmi and Ojo dug deep, staying composed under pressure to grind out a memorable victory and book their place in the final.

This gold medal is more than just another addition to Nigeria’s growing medal haul at the African Youth Games. It is a clear signal that the next generation of Nigerian table tennis stars is ready to carry the torch forward, capable of standing toe to toe with the continent’s elite.
