Grassroots football is often spoken about through players and clubs, but rarely do we pause to celebrate the men and women who ensure fairness, discipline and order on the pitch. In Ikorodu, that narrative changed with the successful staging of the first edition of the Super 4 Chairman’s Cup by the Ikorodu Football Referees Society, a competition that placed unity, respect and shared history above rivalry.

Under the leadership of Mr Ayeni Ridwanulah, Chairman of the Ikorodu Football Referees Society, the Chairman’s Cup was conceived not merely as a tournament but as a reunion of generations. It brought together patrons, retired referees and active officials in a setting where football served as a bridge rather than a battleground.

A FORMAT BUILT FOR FAIR PLAY

The competition featured four carefully selected teams who battled in a round robin league format. Each team faced one another once, ensuring balance, fairness and competitiveness. At the conclusion of the league phase, the top two teams progressed to the final, setting the stage for a fitting climax.

TEAMS ROOTED IN LEGACY AND HONOUR

Each team carried the name of a respected patron whose contributions have shaped refereeing in Ikorodu over the years.

Team Ọba Oluwa was named after the Royal Life Patron, His Royal Majesty Oba Moroofdeen Oyekunle Oluwa
Team Ogunmuyiwa honoured the Life Patron, Honourable Ogunmuyiwa
Team Ayeni paid tribute to the Grand Patron, Mr Ayeni S T, retired FIFA referee
Team Sonibare represented another Grand Patron, Alhaji Sonibare Lukman

These names were more than labels. They were reminders of service, mentorship and sacrifice within the refereeing community.

MORE THAN A TOURNAMENT

Speaking with our correspondent, Chairman Ayeni Ridwanulah explained the deeper vision behind the Chairman’s Cup.

He stated that the major objective of the competition was to promote unity, mutual respect and cordial relationships among all registered members of the Ikorodu Football Referees Society, from patrons and elders to active referees.

According to him, the Chairman’s Cup is intended to become an annual tradition, serving as both a celebration of referees and the society’s end-of-year gathering. The structure of the tournament reflected this philosophy perfectly.

Retired referees took charge of officiating duties, showcasing their experience and wisdom. Active referees stepped onto the pitch as players, reminding everyone that beyond the whistle lies a shared love for the game.

PRIZES RECOGNITION AND INCENTIVES

Unlike conventional competitions where only one team claims glory, the Chairman’s Cup was designed so that every participant emerged a winner. Prize money was allocated to all teams, with additional incentives reserved for the finalists. This approach reinforced the core values of inclusion, appreciation and collective growth.

ALL EYES ON THE FINAL

As anticipation builds, the big question remains unanswered. Who will lift the first-ever Chairman’s Cup when Team Ayeni faces Team Sonibare? Beyond the trophy, the real victory has already been achieved in unity, fellowship and renewed bonds within the refereeing family.
