Despite several changes to their regular starting lineup, the Super Eagles of Nigeria once again underlined their growing authority at the Africa Cup of Nations, securing a convincing 3-1 victory over Uganda’s Cranes in an entertaining Group C encounter.
Already assured of progression, head coach Eric Chelle took the opportunity to test his squad depth, but the result was the same familiar story. Nigeria looked composed, clinical, and confident, while Uganda showed moments of promise without the cutting edge to truly threaten.
Early Pressure and Uganda’s Missed Chances
Uganda kicked off proceedings with intent and nearly stunned the Super Eagles early on. Rogers Mato was at the heart of the Cranes’ attacking threat, first forcing Nigeria’s defence into hurried clearances before narrowly heading wide from close range in the 13th minute.
Denis Omedi also squandered a golden opportunity moments later after a clever short corner routine caught Nigeria flat-footed. His mistimed effort drifted wide, a miss that would soon haunt the Cranes.
Nigeria, meanwhile, settled into their rhythm gradually. Victor Osimhen tested Denis Masinde Onyango early, while Paul Onuachu’s physical presence increasingly troubled Uganda’s backline.

Onuachu Breaks the Deadlock
The breakthrough arrived in the 28th minute after sustained Nigerian pressure. Fisayo Dele Bashiru fired a firm pass into the box, which Paul Onuachu controlled beautifully. The striker shifted onto his left foot and rifled an unstoppable shot into the corner to give Nigeria a deserved lead.
Uganda’s goalkeeper Onyango kept the scoreline respectable with several sharp saves, including a stunning reflex stop to deny Onuachu moments earlier, but Nigeria went into halftime firmly in control.

Second Half Turns Decisive
Uganda’s task became even more difficult early in the second half when substitute Salim Magoola was shown a straight red card for a brutal challenge, leaving the Cranes a man down.
Nigeria immediately capitalized.
In the 62nd minute, Samuel Chukwueze slipped a clever pass into Raphael Onyedika, who danced past his marker and fired low into the centre of the goal for Nigeria’s second.
Five minutes later, Onyedika struck again. This time, he raced clear after receiving a perfectly weighted pass and calmly drilled the ball into the bottom corner, completing his brace and effectively killing off the contest.

Late Consolation for Uganda
To their credit, Uganda continued to fight. Their persistence paid off in the 75th minute when Allan Okello set up Rogers Mato, who finished calmly to reduce the deficit and give the travelling supporters something to cheer.
Nigeria, however, never looked rattled. Chelle introduced fresh legs, including Akor Adams and Tochukwu Nnadi, as the Super Eagles expertly managed the closing stages with disciplined possession and defensive organization.

Another Statement of Intent
The final whistle confirmed a 3-1 victory that perfectly summed up Nigeria’s AFCON campaign so far. Even with heavy rotation, the Super Eagles showed depth, balance, and tactical maturity.
For Uganda, the match highlighted moments of promise but also the fine margins at the elite tournament level. Missed chances and defensive lapses ultimately proved costly.
For Nigeria, it was another clear statement. This Super Eagles squad is not just winning. It is evolving, rotating, and still dominating.
