The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been dealt a significant setback at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following the withdrawal of forward Cyriel Dessers due to injury.

The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed that Dessers has been officially ruled out of the tournament after medical assessments revealed a thigh problem sustained in camp. Subsequent scan results confirmed the extent of the injury, making it impossible for the striker to recover in time to feature at the continental showpiece.

Dessers, who arrived at the tournament eager to play a key role in Nigeria’s AFCON campaign, will now return to his club to continue treatment and begin a structured recovery process under medical supervision.

The 30-year-old forward has been one of the reliable attacking options for the Super Eagles in recent years, offering physical presence, intelligent movement, and a strong work rate whenever called upon. His absence leaves the technical crew with the task of reshuffling attacking options as Nigeria continue their quest for continental glory.

Injury setbacks are an unfortunate part of tournament football, especially in a competition as physically demanding as AFCON. Dessers’ withdrawal comes at a time when squad depth and tactical flexibility are being tested across teams competing for the title.

While missing out on the tournament will be a major personal disappointment for the striker, the focus now shifts to a full and careful recovery to ensure he returns stronger for both club and country.
