The 2026 indoor athletics season is barely underway, yet Nigerian athletes are already leaving unmistakable fingerprints across Europe and North America. From Germany to Belgium and across the United States, performances over the weekend delivered personal bests, season-leading marks, historic African records, and statement wins that underline Nigeria’s growing influence on the global track and field stage.

At the Sparkassen Indoor Meeting in Dortmund, Fola Olaoye delivered another reminder of his consistency at the elite level. Competing against a deep international field, the Nigerian sprinter finished fourth in the men’s 60-meter final, stopping the clock at 6.60 seconds. The time equalled his personal best and confirmed his place among Europe’s fastest short sprinters this season. His compatriot Enoch Adegoke also impressed, opening his indoor campaign with a personal best of 6.71 seconds in the preliminary rounds, a promising start that suggests more to come as the season builds.

Across the Atlantic, the New Mexico Collegiate Classic became a showcase of Nigerian excellence. Success Umukoro delivered one of the standout performances in the women’s 60 metres, clocking a season’s best 7.16 seconds to finish second, narrowly behind winner Brianna Selby, who posted 7.15. On the men’s side, Joshua Caleb advanced to the final and finished fourth, with his fastest time of 6.61 seconds coming in the semifinals. Faith Osamuyi also reached the semifinals of the women’s 60 metres hurdles, recording 8.26 seconds in a competitive field.

Usheoritse Itsekiri added another win to his growing indoor résumé at the Pandas Open in Edmonton. The sprinter powered through the men’s 60 metres to claim victory in 6.62 seconds, edging Malachi Murray, who finished in 6.63, and Jordan Soufi, in 6.67. The margins were tight, but Itsekiri’s execution under pressure once again stood out.

Versatility was on full display at the Gopher Classic in Minnesota, where Charles Godfred delivered excellence across disciplines. He blazed to a new personal best of 6.61 seconds to win his 60 metres heat, emerging as the fastest man across all heats. Despite qualifying comfortably, Godfred opted out of the final to focus on the long jump, a decision that paid off handsomely as he went on to win the event with an impressive leap of 7.93 metres.

In the quarter mile, Chioma Nwachukwu continued her upward trajectory. The Iowa State athlete posted a new indoor personal best of 51.93 seconds to finish second in her 400 metres heat at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic. Her teammates David Akhalu and Prior Ochonogor were also in action in the men’s race, recording 47.00 seconds, a personal best for Akhalu, and 47.71 seconds respectively.

The headline performance of the weekend came from Samuel Ogazi, who announced his season in emphatic fashion. Competing over 400 metres indoors at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic, Ogazi clocked a blistering 44.85 seconds. The time places him second on the African all time indoor list, behind only Ezekiel Nathaniel’s 44.74, and ties American sprint star Fred Kerley for 13th on the global all time rankings. It was a statement run that immediately elevates Ogazi into the conversation among the world’s elite quarter milers.

Kelly Ufodiama continued her strong start to the year at the Carolina Challenge, winning her 200 metres section in 22.90 seconds ahead of Zaya Akins. Already the fastest Nigerian woman this season in both the 60 metres, where she holds a personal best of 7.14, and the 200 metres, Ufodiama is quietly establishing herself as one of the most consistent sprinters on the circuit. At the same meet, Success Oyibu also impressed for Baylor, winning her heat in a new indoor personal best of 24.09 seconds.

Blessing Ogundiran delivered a commanding display at the Visit Gainesville Indoor Classic, storming to victory in the women’s 60 metres with a time of 7.28 seconds. She finished well clear of Tonyan Beckford and Camilla Nicholas, underlining her dominance from the blocks to the line.

There was also a winning start to the year for Ella Onojuvwevwo, who opened her 2026 campaign at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic with a 200 metres victory in 23.24 seconds. Olayinka Olajide added to the Nigerian presence by running a new indoor personal best of 23.36 seconds to finish second in another section.

In the field events, two-time Olympic finalist Chukwuebuka Enekwechi continued his consistency on the world stage. Competing at the Madrid World Indoor Tour, he threw 20.38 metres to finish fifth in the men’s shot put. The event was won by American Jordan Geist, who equalled his world lead of 22.04 metres, ahead of Jamaica’s Rajindra Campbell and fellow American Roger Steen.

Hurdles specialist Adaobi Tabugbo closed the weekend on a high note in Belgium. At the IFAM Louvain La Neuve Indoor Meet, she improved on her own national lead to win the women’s 60-metre hurdles in 8.09 seconds. Great Britain’s Emma Nwofor finished second in 8.14, while Belgium’s Angel Agwazie placed third in 8.32. Tabugbo’s consistency continues to mark her as one of Nigeria’s most reliable performers indoors.

As the indoor season gathers momentum, these performances reflect more than isolated successes. They speak to a generation of Nigerian athletes competing confidently across continents, setting records, winning races, and pushing African athletics forward. With major championships on the horizon, the signs suggest that this is only the beginning.
