A determined quartet of Nigerian women referees have safely arrived in the City of Francistown, Botswana, after an exhausting 26-hour journey to officiate a crucial FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup qualifier.

Their trip began at the Mohammed Murtala International Airport in Lagos at exactly 1:30 pm on Tuesday afternoon. From Lagos, they travelled through Addis Ababa, then Johannesburg, onwards to Gaborone, before finally landing in Francistown at about 4 pm on Wednesday evening.

It was a long journey across multiple countries, but for these officials, it represents something far greater than travel fatigue. It represents progress, recognition, and the growing influence of Nigerian women in African football officiating.

Nigeria’s Female Officials Take Center Stage

The Nigerian quartet is headlined by referee Akintoye Yemisi Eunice, who will take charge of the highly anticipated encounter.

She will be assisted by Beauty Kabeda Terah as Assistant Referee One and Aisosa Faith Agbons as Assistant Referee Two. Completing the team is Alaba Olufunmilayo Abigael, who will serve as the Fourth Official.

The officiating panel also includes Aisha Nalule from Uganda as Match Commissioner and Ethiopia’s highly respected Lidya Tafesse Abebe as Referee Assessor.

For Nigerian football, this is another significant statement. The appointment of four women from the country to handle such an important fixture reinforces Nigeria’s growing reputation not just in women’s football performance but also in elite officiating standards.

The Match at Stake

The fixture will take place at the Obed Itani Chilume Stadium in Francistown. It is the second-round return leg of the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup qualifier for Poland 2026 between Botswana and Cameroon.

Cameroon’s Under-20 Lionesses head into the match with a commanding advantage after defeating Botswana five nil in the first leg played at the Olembe Stadium.

With such a dominant first leg result, Botswana faces an uphill task at home. However, football has always thrived on resilience and unexpected drama, especially in youth competitions.

Kick-off is scheduled for 15:00 hours on Friday, 13 February 2026.

A Symbol of Growth for African Women Referees

In recent years, African women referees have continued to break barriers on continental and global stages. Nigeria has been at the forefront of that progress.

From domestic leagues to CAF competitions and FIFA tournaments, Nigerian female referees have consistently proven their competence, fitness levels, and technical mastery of the game.

For Akintoye Yemisi Eunice and her team, this assignment is more than another match. It is an opportunity to further cement Nigeria’s presence in elite women officiating circles and inspire the next generation of female referees back home.

Their journey may have taken 26 hours, but the road they are paving for African women in football officiating will last much longer.
