The Nigerian football community has been thrown into deep mourning following the passing of one of its most respected figures, Hon. Sani Zubairu, a retired FIFA referee and President of the Nigeria Football Referees Association.

The National Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Referees Association officially confirmed his death in a statement released on Tuesday by Chukwudi Ejimofor, the National Publicity Secretary of the Association. According to the statement, Zubairu passed away in the early hours of today at the National Hospital Abuja.

The announcement, signed by Deputy President Sir Kelechi Mejuobi, expressed profound grief over the loss of a man widely regarded as a pillar in Nigerian refereeing. The association described his death as particularly painful, noting that his wealth of experience, leadership, and constant dedication to the growth of refereeing in Nigeria and beyond remained invaluable at this critical time.

Sir Mejuobi paid glowing tribute to the late Zubairu, describing him as a quintessential leader whose influence transcended generations. He highlighted Zubairu’s exceptional ability to mentor young referees while maintaining strong relationships across all levels of the football ecosystem.

Within refereeing circles, Zubairu was more than an administrator. He was a steady voice of reason, a bridge builder, and a symbol of professionalism. His tenure in key leadership roles helped shape modern officiating standards in Nigeria. Notably, he served within the Nigeria Football Federation as Head of the Refereeing Unit and Secretary of the Referees Committee, where he contributed significantly to policy direction and referee development programmes.

Colleagues and stakeholders remember him for fostering unity and cohesion within the refereeing body. At a time when consistency and credibility in officiating remain crucial to the integrity of the game, Zubairu’s legacy stands as a benchmark for discipline, fairness, and progressive leadership.

His journey as a FIFA-badged referee earned him respect not just locally but on the international stage. Even after retirement, he remained deeply involved in the administrative and developmental aspects of refereeing, ensuring that the next generation benefited from his knowledge and experience.

Beyond the pitch and boardroom, those who encountered him speak of a humble and approachable personality. He was known for his ability to listen, guide, and support without prejudice, earning him the role of a father figure to many within the refereeing community.

In accordance with Islamic rites, his remains will be laid to rest today in Bauchi, bringing to a close a life dedicated to service, integrity, and the advancement of football officiating.
