With four matches played across Groups A and B and a total of 16 goals scored, Matchday One proved that even with shortened halves of 30 minutes, the intensity, drama and quality rivaled any full length contest.

From dominant displays to narrow escapes and moments of individual brilliance, the tournament wasted no time in setting a high standard for the days ahead.

36 Lion FC Dominate SGFC Athletics in Group A Opener

The curtain raiser saw 36 Lion FC stamp their authority early with a convincing 3-1 victory over SGFC Athletics in Group A.

The match began with early intent from both sides, but it was 36 Lion who struck first when Uche Emeribe etched his name into the history books, scoring the first goal of the 2026 edition.

Azuka Alatan doubled the lead before halftime, giving 36 Lion a comfortable cushion heading into the break.

SGFC Athletics responded strongly in the second half, with captain Okwuosa Chukwudi pulling one back after capitalizing on a defensive lapse. The momentum briefly swung in their favor as they dominated possession in search of an equalizer.

However, substitute Micheal Hunsa delivered the final blow in stoppage time, scoring with his first touch to seal a commanding win.

The result immediately positioned 36 Lion FC as early frontrunners in Group A.

Ikorodu City Edge Smart City in Five Goal Thriller

The first Group B clash delivered one of the most entertaining games of the day, as Ikorodu City FC battled to a dramatic 3-2 win over Smart City FC.

After a tightly contested first half, Farouk Salami broke the deadlock just before halftime, giving Ikorodu City the advantage.

Smart City responded immediately after the restart, with Hassan Haddi curling in a superb free kick to level the score.

The game took another twist when Ikorodu City thought they had regained the lead, only for the goal to be ruled out after a Football Video Support review for handball.

Undeterred, Ali Moses stepped up moments later to restore the lead with a well taken finish. Tominwa Awojobi extended the advantage to 3-1 after a swift attacking move orchestrated by Uche Jaguar.

Smart City made it a nervy finish through Muiz Lawal’s late strike, but Ikorodu City held firm to secure all three points in a pulsating encounter.

Klassisc FC Grind Out Narrow Win Over FC Bethel

In the second Group A fixture, Klassisc FC claimed a hard fought 1-0 victory over FC Bethel in a match defined by tactical discipline and goalkeeping brilliance.

The decisive moment came in the first half when Klassisc were awarded a penalty after a handball inside the box. Charles Obani converted from the spot, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way despite the ball clipping the post before going in.

FC Bethel dominated possession for large spells, especially in the second half, but were repeatedly denied by an inspired performance from Klassisc goalkeeper Faisal Umar.

The highlight of the match came when Umar produced a stunning save to deny a spectacular bicycle kick effort, preserving his side’s slender lead.

Despite relentless pressure, Klassisc held on to secure maximum points and strengthen their position in Group A.
