After the fireworks of Matchday One, which produced sixteen goals across four exciting fixtures, Matchday Two of the Jagaban Cup 2026 delivered an entirely different storyline at the Legacy Pitch inside the National Stadium in Surulere.
This time the goals were scarce, but the tension was much higher. Only three goals were scored across four matches, yet every game carried giant implications for qualification as teams battled fiercely for survival in the fifth edition of the prestigious youth football tournament.
From narrow wins to a surprise elimination of a former champion, the second day of action reshaped the race for the final.
FC Bethel Bounce Back With Narrow Win Over SGFC Athletics
FC Bethel began Matchday Two determined to recover from their opening day defeat, and they did exactly that with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over SGFC Athletics.
The match started with SGFC Athletics showing early intent. Captain Okwuosa Chukwudi nearly punished a defensive slip by Amowia Samuel, but goalkeeper Stephen Uche reacted quickly to keep the scores level.
However, Bethel responded almost immediately. In the sixth minute, Tijani Ridwan calmly slotted the ball into the right corner, giving FC Bethel the lead.
Bethel grew into the match after the goal, dominating possession and creating several promising situations. Left back Oluwatobi Farede almost doubled the advantage with a powerful set piece effort that forced a fine save from goalkeeper Gbadamosi Suleiman.
SGFC Athletics pushed hard in the second half, and Chukwudi came close to equalizing with a late effort that narrowly missed the target. Despite sustained pressure in the closing minutes, Bethel held firm to secure their first victory of the tournament.
The defeat marked a disappointing campaign for SGFC Athletics, who have now lost two consecutive matches and are out of contention. FC Bethel, on the other hand, revived their chances of reaching the final.
Mavlon FC Shock: Two-Time Champions Smart City
The biggest surprise of Matchday Two arrived in the second game when Mavlon FC stunned two-time champions Smart City FC with a disciplined 1-0 victory.
Smart City dominated possession for large parts of the first half and created several chances through Warith Olaoye, whose bicycle kick forced an excellent save from goalkeeper Sunday Kufre.
Kufre proved to be the difference throughout the contest, repeatedly denying Smart City attackers, including Mustapha Mubarak, with a series of outstanding saves.
After absorbing long spells of pressure, Mavlon struck the decisive blow in the 40th minute. Ifeanyi Onyene stepped up to deliver a brilliant set piece strike that finally broke the deadlock.
Smart City threw everything forward in search of an equalizer and almost found it when Fawaz Adeniyi tested Kufre again, but the Mavlon goalkeeper continued his impressive performance to protect the lead.
When the final whistle sounded, Mavlon had secured a remarkable win over one of the most successful teams in Jagaban Cup history. The result leaves them with a strong chance of reaching the final while Smart City suffers the shock of an early group stage exit for the first time in the tournament.
Klassisc FC and 36 Lion Share Points in Tactical Stalemate
The third match of the day between Klassisc FC and 36 Lion FC produced the only draw of the round as both teams battled to a goalless stalemate.
Despite the absence of goals, the match was far from dull. 36 Lion came close to opening the scoring early when Micheal Hunsa attempted an audacious lob after spotting goalkeeper Faisal Umar off his line.
Both sides continued to create half chances. Seun Lawal and Lekan James went close for 36 Lion, while Klassisc relied on quick attacks through David Ude and Emmanuel Inah.
Goalkeepers also played crucial roles. Emmanuel Igaga produced a fine save to deny Klassisc, while Umar was alert to keep out several dangerous situations.
In the closing minutes both teams searched for a winner, but solid defensive work from players such as Nonso Umenozie ensured the match ended without a goal.
The result means Klassisc FC and 36 Lion FC now sit on four points each in Group A, with 36 Lion maintaining top position thanks to a superior goal difference.
Broad City FC Edge Ikorodu City to Secure Qualification
The final game of the day delivered another narrow result as Broad City FC defeated Ikorodu City FC 1–0 to maintain their perfect start in the tournament.
Ikorodu City created the first opportunity when Nasir Sulaimon whipped a dangerous cross into the box, but no attacker was able to connect.
Broad City eventually found the breakthrough in the fifteenth minute when Emmanuel Udeogu capitalized on poor communication in Ikorodu City’s defence to send the ball into the net.
Ikorodu City pushed relentlessly for an equalizer throughout the second half. Samuel Ezekiel and Bada Moses both came close, while Ibrahim Abdulquadri had a powerful effort blocked by the Broad City defence.
The match became even more difficult for Ikorodu City late on when midfielder Aderemi Adeoye received a second yellow card and was sent off.
Despite late pressure, Broad City held their ground and secured victory, with defender Hanif Sanusi making a crucial block in the dying moments.
The win makes Broad City the only team with a perfect record after two matches and confirms their qualification for the next stage. The final round of group stage fixtures scheduled for tomorrow will determine whether they compete in the final or the third-place match.
