On a solemn Saturday afternoon at exactly 3:51 PM, the football community bid farewell to this remarkable figure as he was laid to rest at his Idomila, Ijebu Ode, home. His passing on Friday, after a brief illness, left a void that will be difficult to fill.

Fondly known as Teddy, Otunba Tade Azeez carved out an illustrious career that many aspiring referees only dream of. From the rough pitches of Lagos to the grand stages of the Nigeria Premier League, he left a trail of professionalism, discipline, and service.
His impact was not confined to blowing the whistle on match days. As a young, ambitious referee, Tade Azeez quickly rose through the ranks. In 1996, he was elected Assistant General Secretary of the Lagos State Referees Council, and by 1998, he became the Council’s General Secretary.
Recognizing his passion and leadership, his peers elevated him to Chairman of the Lagos State Referees Council in 2003 — a position he held for an unprecedented eight years, nurturing a new generation of referees and laying foundations for the future of officiating in the state.
National recognition soon followed. In 2011, Otunba Tade Azeez became the Deputy President of the Nigeria Football Referees Association (NFRA), before ascending to President in 2015, a role in which he championed referees’ welfare, training, and professional development nationwide.
But his influence extended far beyond refereeing. Tade Azeez also served as a board member and Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association. Nationally, he contributed to crucial football structures, sitting on the NFF Referees Appointment and Development Committee and the Security Committee during Nigeria’s hosting of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2009.
His dedication to football administration, mentoring, and leadership left an indelible mark across generations. The respect he commanded was clear in the overwhelming attendance at his burial, despite the short notice.

Alongside them were numerous retired and active FIFA referees, friends, and well-wishers — a powerful testament to his towering legacy.
In a country where sports administration often struggles with continuity and credibility, Otunba Tade Azeez stood out as a beacon of dedication, integrity, and progress. His work lives on in every referee he mentored, every match he helped organize, and every young official he inspired.
As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life well spent — one devoted to the beautiful game and to building a better future for Nigerian football.
Rest in power, Otunba Tade Azeez. Your whistle may be silent, but your legacy will echo forever.
