The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially released a detailed statistical breakdown of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results. The data paints a comprehensive picture of the academic performance of nearly two million Nigerian candidates who participated in the nationwide examination.

According to the figures released by JAMB, a total of 1,955,069 candidates sat for the 2025 UTME. However, the vast majority—over 1.5 million candidates—scored below 200, reflecting ongoing concerns about the academic preparedness of secondary school leavers.

UTME 2025 Performance Highlights:

  • Candidates who scored above 200: 420, 415
  • Candidates who scored between 300 and 300–319: 7,658
  • Candidates who scored above 320: 4,756
  • Candidates who scored below 200: Over 1.5 million

JAMB also disclosed that 40,247 underage candidates were granted permission to participate in the UTME in order to assess their exceptional academic abilities. However, only 467 candidates (1.16%) from this group met the defined threshold for exceptional performance. These candidates will undergo three additional assessment stages as part of the board’s talent discovery and academic advancement initiatives.

This data release raises important questions about curriculum effectiveness, examination readiness, and the level of academic support available to students preparing for tertiary education.
