At the Grand Final of the 2025 MTN CHAMPS in Uyo, the finishing line wasn’t just the end of a race—it was the beginning of a moment that touched everyone watching. Youth Girls U17 athlete Bernice Onoriode crossed the finish line in 12.40 seconds to clinch the 100m title, but it was the emotional embrace with her father, Felix Onoriode, that captured hearts and headlines.

Earlier in the competition, Bernice had finished second in her semifinal heat. For many, that might have been a moment of pressure, but for Bernice, it was a challenge accepted. In the final, she stormed out of the blocks with purpose, pushing past every doubt and every opponent to claim the gold. The young sprinter didn’t just run for herself—she ran for her family and for something much deeper than a medal.

As she crossed the line and claimed victory, her father was right there at the trackside—his arms outstretched, his pride unmistakable. The bond between father and daughter was unbreakable in that moment, a reminder of the sacrifices, encouragement, and unwavering support that shape young athletes.

But Bernice’s story doesn’t end at the podium.

Last season, she earned an MVP tablet—a prized reward at the grassroots athletics series. Instead of holding on to it, she gave it to her younger sister to help her develop a passion for chess. That act of selflessness is now coming full circle, as Bernice is once again in contention to win another MVP tablet at this season’s finale.

What we see in Bernice is not just a sprinter with blistering speed but a sister with a giving heart and a daughter grounded in humility. In every stride, she carries the spirit of family, resilience, and leadership.

As Nigerian athletics continues to shine at youth levels, stories like Bernice Onoriode’s remind us that success is never truly a solo sprint—it’s a relay of love, sacrifice, and shared dreams.
