The Super Falcons of Nigeria delivered a resounding statement of intent with a 2–0 victory over the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in an international friendly played on Tuesday evening at the MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade was the star of the show, netting both goals in a clinical first-half display that showcased the Falcons’ growing synergy ahead of this summer’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The breakthrough came in the 28th minute after a defensive infringement by the Cameroonians in their penalty area. Ajibade stepped up to the penalty spot and calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper, putting Nigeria in front.

As the first half drew to a close, the Falcons’ attacking verve paid off once again. Rinsola Babajide surged down the flank and provided a perfectly weighted assist for Ajibade, who made no mistake in the second minute of first-half added time (45+2’). That goal doubled Nigeria’s advantage, sending the team into the break with a commanding 2–0 lead.

The second half saw coach Justin Madugu ring in the changes to ensure the team maintained their grip on the contest. Bolaji Olamide and Christy Ucheibe were introduced for Babajide and Toni Payne, injecting fresh energy into the midfield and attack. Cordella Odoma later replaced Jennifer Echegini to further solidify the Falcons’ defensive shape.

Cameroon pushed for a way back into the match, testing Nigeria’s backline with several late efforts, but the Falcons held firm. Five minutes of added time saw the Nigerian defence stay resolute, preserving a well-earned clean sheet.

This victory not only boosts the confidence of the Super Falcons but also underlines their readiness for the challenges ahead at the WAFCON in Morocco. Up next, the Falcons will face Portugal in another friendly encounter, as preparations continue to gather pace for what promises to be a defining summer for African women’s football.
