Today, we pause to reflect on one of the darkest moments in Nigeria’s modern road history. On Wednesday, June 6, 2018, the usually bustling Otedola Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Motorway was transformed into a scene of devastation and tragedy.

A fuel tanker, heavily laden with gasoline, lost control while navigating the bridge. In an instant, the vehicle overturned, spilling its volatile cargo. What followed was an explosion of unimaginable force, engulfing nearby cars, buses, and trucks in a hellish blaze.

Chaos and Courage Amid the Flames
Eyewitnesses that day recall the terror and confusion. The fire spread rapidly, leaving little room for escape as plumes of black smoke choked the air. With the inferno fuelled by the tanker’s load, immediate intervention by the fire service was hampered by the sheer intensity of the flames.

Reports of casualties varied, but it was clear that many lives were lost, and even more were forever changed. Survivors spoke of the searing heat, the deafening crackle of the fire, and the heartbreaking cries for help as vehicles became death traps.

A Hard Lesson in Road Safety
The Otedola Bridge tragedy underscored the immense risks associated with transporting hazardous materials on Nigeria’s busy roads. It exposed longstanding concerns about safety standards and the critical need for stricter regulations and enforcement.

Seven Years Later: Lessons Still Unlearned
Today, seven years on, fuel tankers and other heavy-duty vehicles still ply Nigerian roads daily, often without adequate safety oversight. The specter of another disaster looms, a grim reminder that the lessons of Otedola Bridge must not be forgotten.

As we remember the lives lost on June 6, 2018, let us also renew our call for real change—stronger regulations, better driver training, and proactive enforcement to prevent such tragedies from repeating themselves.

May the memory of those lost continue to guide Nigeria toward safer roads and a more responsible transport system.
